This year marks a special milestone in the life of Leif Cocks, Founder of The Orangutan Project, as he celebrates his 60th birthday. For over three decades, Leif has devoted his life to the conservation and protection of orangutans and their rainforest habitats. His tireless efforts have not only raised global awareness of the plight of these incredible creatures but have also directly contributed to the survival of countless orangutans in the wild.
Leif's journey began in the 1980s at Perth Zoo (Australia), where he first started working with orangutans. It was here that he developed a deep understanding and connection with these remarkable beings, eventually leading to one of his most significant achievements—the release of Temara, the first zoo-born orangutan, back into the wild. This groundbreaking event in 2006 was a testament to Leif's belief that even orangutans born in captivity could be given the chance to live free in their natural habitat.
Building on his experiences at Perth Zoo, Leif founded The Orangutan Project in 1998, driven by his vision for a world where orangutans could thrive in their natural habitats, free from the threats of deforestation, poaching, and the illegal wildlife trade. Under his leadership, The Orangutan Project has grown into a world-renowned conservation organisation, protecting over 2.7 million acres of rainforest in Borneo and Sumatra. The organisation’s impact is profound, from rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned and displaced orangutans to working with local communities to secure and restore critical rainforest habitat.
